The Indiana Masonic Home and Indiana Masonic Home Foundation in a Nutshell

In 1916, the Grand Lodge of Indiana and Indiana Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star opened the Indiana Masonic Home (IMH) to provide a home for needy Masons, widows, and orphans. This year we celebrate the 95th Anniversary of our Masonic Home.

Things have changed over the years. Some residents now pay all of their living costs in independent living homes and apartments; the assisted living center; and the medical center.

IMH is a Continuing Care Retirement Community. As residents’ needs change, the Masonic Home is able to accommodate those changing needs through the following housing opportunities:

Independent Living
  • Garden Homes, Cottages, and Duplexes – 96
  • Freemason Apartments – 7
  • Ball Brothers Apartments – 37
  • Main Building Apartments – 54
Assisted Living
  • One bedroom Apartments – 48
Medical Center
  • Memory Care
  • Skilled Nursing Care
  • State of the Art short Term Rehabilitation
Overall we have an occupancy rate of 84% in our independent living residences. Most vacancies are in single room apartments.

What has not changed over the years is the charitable aspect of the Home. About 50% of the residents have outlived their resources, and the Fraternity still provides them a terrific place to live. That is where the Indiana Masonic Home Foundation comes in.

The Indiana Masonic Home Foundation was incorporated in 1936 to provide long-term financial assistance to the Indiana Masonic Home. Since 1980, the Foundation has provided approximately $58.3 million to the operating budget of the Masonic Home. The distribution this fiscal year will total $3,518,562. The Foundation’s financial support to the Home is used to care for those in the Masonic family who are unable to financially care for themselves.

In addition to our normal operating distribution, the Foundation provided a $3,000,000 distribution to the Masonic Home during the year ended March 31, 2012, to fund the former defined-benefit retirement plan and end the adverse impact of the plan on the Home’s operating budget. These distributions, together with the $2,000,000 distribution in fiscal year 2010-2011 for the construction of the Assisted Living Center, bring the total contributions since 1980 to $63.3 million.

The Foundation also provides $46,000 annually for the publication of The Indiana Freemason.

Some people say, “The Foundation gives several million dollars a year to the Indiana Masonic Home. How can my donation make a difference?” Every dollar counts. In fact the Indiana Masonic Home only opened because Nettie Ransford, Past Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star established a penny collection and raised $32,000 to start construction. Every donation, large or small, means a lot.

A number of gift giving opportunities are possible –
  • Outright gifts by check or credit card (gold cards memorials, gifts in honor of someone).
  • Gifts of life insurance and stocks.
  • Bequests in a will.
  • Charitable gift annuities.
  • Vehicle donation.

Please give generously.
